Magdalena School 7th Grade ELA Mr. Goggans
New School Year 2020-2021 Material. August 2020
Ya at eeh! Hola! and Hello Middle Schoolers!! Welcome to 7th grade and to my class!!
We’re going to read some awesome stories & books this year!!
Here’s a question you can ponder & try to answer:
In a song that they currently play from Dua Lipa, she asks
“Am I falling in love with the one that can break my heart?” Can you identify what is grammatically wrong with her question?
(hint: there is one word that needs to be changed/replaced)
Email me your answers. Who kows? You may even get a small prize. If you don’t know it, then no worries! We have plenty of time to learn these things! Just read the story below and enjoy!
Complete “Your Face Tells Your Story” I’ll be sending a hard copy with the bus drivers on Monday, so get it from them—and I’ll also leave some with Jacob in the High School Office if you are able to drop by there.
One of the “Your Face Tells Your Story” templates will be in you Google Classroom this week too.
After that, for Activity #2 we’re going to read a really exciting story!!
Read the short story “My First Free Summer”
It’s in a book we’re going to use here at school, but I’ll send hard copies to you with bus driver, and I’ll put it on this page as well.
Below is old, assignments from when you were in 6th grade. _____________________________________________________________________________
New July Activity!!
I put an amazing story by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, “The Medicine Bag,”
on my 8th Grade Readings site. You should definitely go read it!! It’s about a middle-school boy who lives in the city but his grandpa, who lives on the reservation far away, comes to visit unexpectedly. It’s so good!! You’ll be glad you read it!!
Read it and email me some feedback of what you thought about the story.
Have a good day/week/rest of your vacation! See ya soon!!
The Outsiders Hello Steers & Lady Steers!! I hope you and your families are doing great!! I miss you all!!
Reading & Writing Assignments for 1st 3 weeks of
4th 9 weeks (end of March/beginning of April 17th).
Here are a couple of things that you can do to keep your minds active!
If you google “The Outsiders full text pdf,” then you can find the go to the 2nd site and it has the whole book in text.
We finished reading right about where Ponyboy, Johnnie, and Dally are on the way back from the Dairy Queen and they see the church on fire. On this site it’s page 77. So, if you can keep reading/finish reading the book, then that will be great!! Maybe just write a plot summary (what happens in each chapter) and how you feel about it would be good.
After you finish reading the book (I know several of you have already finished it!! :) ), then I definitely recommend that you watch the 1983 film version. It’s one of the best movies ever!! I have it on youtube and tried to put the link on the title up there, but it just gave me the previews. smh. I’ll see if I am able to share it again later.( I’m sure you all know how to access free movies anyway). Right now I’m going to create other tasks for the 6th and 8th graders!
Also, let me know anything that you are reading that you find interesting. I’ll post some books I liked a lot when I was younger & some that I’ve read/heard about recently and maybe you can find them online. If not, the Magdalena Library has a strong wifi signal and a nice outside area to hang out and use their resources; they have all es!!of e-books, kahn academy links, and a ton of interesting resources. I talked to the lady at the Socorro Public Library, and they are closed, but she said that you can go to their website and they have links like “Brainfuse” the one with the boy reading a book, and a bunch of other resources that are also free for you to use.
Finally, one thing that you can do that actually helps how you feel, is to write down your daily activities & feelings!!
One of my favorite quotes is “Reading is Inhaling (breathing in) and Writing is Exhaling (breathing out)”
So Exhale! Write down how you’re feeling, what you’re doing, anything at all!! I’ll conisider that your weekly journal writing (which we haven’t done in quite a few weeks).
Well take care of yourselves!! Be good!! Go Outside & get some exercise!! and then sit under a tree and read (or write) :)
If you need anything, the just email me at George.Goggans@magschools.us
Take Care!! Goggans
Take care and I’ll be back on this page in the next day or two. So if you need to contact me just email me!
Take care and be safe!! You guys are the best!! ttysoon!!
Monday, April, 20th—Thursday, April 23rd
Hello Again everybody!!
They’ll be more reading assignments up here really soon, but right now we need to focus on your writing! You may write a journal entryy, a creative story, or whatever you like. We just need you to write! You can even write it on paper and just take apicture of it & send it!! Look what Bon Jovi (he’s an old rocker from the 80’s & 90’s. You probably have heard a couple of his songs. If not, then just ask your parents/granparents). Anyway, here’s what he says about how important (and fun!) it can be to write down what’s going on in your life! You can turn your writing into a poem, a song, a story, whatever! https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/get-jon-bon-jovi-live-in-your-classroom-plus-five-other-things-that-lifted-our-spirits-1.4230442
So let’s do that! The BT standards for the next 20 days are to “produce clear & well-developed writing.” So send me what you have, and we’ll work on whatever you need to work on--but I know you all are great writers anyway!! Take Care!! Stay Safe!! Miss you all!! --Goggans
Monday 4/26 to Thursday April 30th
!. Hey Everyone!! Hope y’all are doing great!! I’m excited because we’re starting one of my favorite novels, Bearstone!! The 8th Graders are reading it too because I want them to read it before they go on to high school, so if you hear of them talking about the same novel or see it posted on the 8th grade page, then don’t think there’s been a mistake: both 7th & 8th graders are reading it!! It’s so good!! It’s about a boy about your age, Cloyd Atcitty, who is half Dine and half Ute and the trouble he gets into at school and everything. It starts out with him looking for his father (whom he never knew) in Window Rock, and the rest of the novel is set up near Durango and Pagosa Springs (oh and he does go visit his grandma in Utah one day too). But it’s really good!! If you go to youtube and search ‘Bearstone novel,’ then the first 4 results you’ll get have pictures of the book pages and they’re called “Reading Will Hobbs Bearstone.’ If you don’t want to read along with the guy (he doesn’t know how to pronounce the names, says ‘reecords’ instead of ‘records’ on the first page, and stuff), then you can just mute him and read it yourself. But it’s kind of fun to listen to him read (mainly because he’s not that great ;)) . So the first part is 32 and ½ minutes long, so you should definitely be able to have that completed by next Monday! Just listen to it if you don’t want to read it! It’s a fascinating story that you all should be able to relate to!! Hopefully you read along or on your own, but if not, just listen to it.
Okay. Well you all stay safe!! I miss you guys!! Take care and keep in touch!!
May 4th – May 7th
Since some of you are just getting started on the assignments, lets everyone just keep following Bearstone instructions and writing directions from the week above!
This book/story is so awesome!! You’ll love it!!
Take Care!! Miss Y’all!!
May 11th – May 14th.
Bearstone is getting really exciting!! We need to finish reading it next week, so if you haven’t started or haven’t gotten very far, then just sit down and listen to it!! (see directions above under 4/26-4/30 assignment).
This week we should get to about p.86 (end of Chapter 13). The whole book is only 150 pages, and it’s really big print and easy to read (not to mention exciting!!)
Write journal entries about what’s going on in your life or
Write summaries of the chapters of Bearstone!
Email them to me & let me know how you’re doing!!
Miss you all!! Stay Safe!!
May 18th to 21st Last week of School!!
If you need to do any reading/listening this week, then do that please.
And if you have anything writings or journal entries to turn in, the do that as well please.
See assignments above if you don’t know yet what’s expected.
Well this about wraps it up!
But. . .
Continue to write about what’s going on with you over the summer! Once a week, once a day, or whenever. It’d be best if you made a little schedule like “Oooh It’s Monday! I need to write about what’s been going on.” Or something like that. It’s just important to write things down. Your lives are so important in the world. Like Leslie M. Silko says
“Stories are all we have you see. We don’t have anything if we don’t have the stories.”
And your lives are daily stories!! So write them down and save them!!
Stay Safe & Take Care!
See Ya Soon!!
Also, I’ll continue to post things for you to read and stuff over the summer, so if you want to stay active and find interesting stories and activities, then keep checking this page every week. :)
